Safety

Managing DNS comes with great responsibility. Setting up DNS zones correctly is crucial to the proper functioning of DNS. We understand like no other how important security is. In fact, it is our highest priority. Therefore, we have gone to great lengths to ensure maximum security.

Managing DNS through ctrlDNS requires a link to the relevant provider. ctrlDNS does not take over the hosting of your DNS, but has read and write permissions for changes. The linked provider remains responsible for DNS hosting at all times.

When connecting to your provider's API data, this data is stored in the database. ctrlDNS ensures that this data is stored reversibly and encrypted. This means that the data cannot be read directly from the database, but is only available in our application at the time we need to connect to a provider's API. To accomplish this, we use a key in the file system, a key in the application and the data from the database. The data is readable only if the two keys and the encrypted value match.

When a change is made from your own account, or the account you have shared a zone with, it is recorded in the log. This way you can always see who made the change, exactly what was changed and when it happened.

You can easily activate two-step verification in your account. This adds an extra layer of security beyond the default username and password. Administrators can also enforce that all employees use two-step verification. Common apps such as Google and Microsoft Authenticator can be used for our two-step verification. Users should provide a mobile phone number for SMS authentication in case of problems generating a one-time code.

When you connect to one of the providers, not all zones are imported immediately. After adding a provider, you can choose to import all zones or a selection of them.
